Abstract:
"Yids' cuckoo" and "Jewish hen" are names given by the dwellers of Polesie (a frontier area, divided between Belarus and Ukraine) to the hoopoe (Upupa epops) and to the partridge (Perdix perdix), respectively. Notes that it is usual among Slavs to denote "abnormal" plants, animals, and even natural phenomena as "Jewish". Hoopoe and partridge are perceived as Jewish birds in Polesie; folk tales and superstitions connect them with Jewish appearance, language, and rituals. The hoopoe is seen as Jewish because it bears Jewish names, "talks" and "stinks" like a Jew; it is also believed to have betrayed Jesus. The partridge is mentioned in the story of the Exodus. This study is based on data from ethnolinguistic expeditions to Polesie, mainly to its Ukrainian part, which took place in 1981-2000.
