Abstract:
Perusing the writings of Polish anti-Jewish polemicists, both Catholic and non-Catholic (e.g. Miczyński, Pikulski, Czechowic), examines their interpretations of the Jewish dietary laws. Despite some mistakes, the polemicists had a good knowledge of these laws. The texts convey that the very fact of the existence of the dietary rules attests to the carnality of the Jews, their focus on the material aspects of life. The writers associate the dietary laws with the alleged host desecration (of the Eucharist) and with the consumption of Christian blood by Jews. This association makes all Jewish food prohibited for Christians. Moreover, in some polemical works, the Jewish laws are associated with Jewish hatred of Christians, Jewish magic practices, and the economic damage that the Jews cause to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
