Abstract:
Describes the work "Libro del Alborayque", an anonymous anti-Converso pamphlet, which was written in the city of Llerena (Extremadura) in 1488. It ridiculed the Conversos by comparing them with Alborayque, a reference to al-Buraq, the chimerical steed that Muhammad rode into the seventh heaven. "Alborayque" was a name given to the Conversos in Extremadura because of their hybrid character, being neither Jews nor Christians. The Alborayque in the book had the tail of a serpent, mouth of a wolf, feet and eyes of a human, and body of an ox - twenty such corruptions in all. Each of those corruptions corresponded to traits attributed to the Conversos: hypocrisy, murder, deicide, sodomy, impurity, etc. This work was one expression of the vast anti-Jewish literature published in Spain in the 15th-18th centuries. The original text is in the National Library in Madrid (Ms. 17891).
