Abstract:
A translation into Spanish of the Travel Book of Benjamín de Tudela was found within the archival funds of the Portuguese Feitoria of Antwerp, an early-modern commercial institution constituted for the most part by Portuguese Jewish converts residents in Antwerp. This supposes a substantial change in our knowledge about the literature tradition of this work, since until then it was believed that the first version in Spanish was wrote at the beginning of the 20th century, whereas the one found dates from the late 16th century. His analysis indicates that it is a piece of internal consumption that had no impact on the later literature, a direct translation of the Latin version of Benito Arias Montano that indicates the existence of an incipient cultural interest in the Jewish roots of the Sephardic community installed in Antwerp.
