Abstract:
A paper delivered at a conference in Milano, April 1991. Discusses the functions of memory in the Jewish tradition, and the difficulty of dealing with the memory of the Holocaust as a singular historical event with neither meaning nor explication. Calls for historicization of the memory of the Holocaust, without emotional aspects which could harm Jewish-Christian relations. Refers to the rejection by non-Jews of personal and collective responsibility for the extermination, as expressed by historical revisionism, and recent attempts to over-emphasize the aid given to Jews as opposed to responsibility for the crimes committed. Outlines the responsibility of the Church: the "teaching of contempt" and recent positions concerning the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz, the beatification of Edith Stein and support for Kurt Waldheim.
