Abstract:
Dario Disegni (1878-1967) became the Chief Rabbi of Torino in 1935. He was a strictly observant Jew, and also an Italian patriot and an adherent of fascism. States that, like many other Italian Jews of his generation (who inherited assimilationist tendencies from the time of the "Risorgimento"), he did not realize the terrible danger the Jews were facing. After the enactment of the Racial Laws in 1938, he chose a policy of silence in public, carrying out clandestine educational activities and assisting Jews whenever he could. At the time of the German occupation of Torino (1943), he escaped deportation, hiding in the homes of non-Jews. In 1945 he returned to his post as Chief Rabbi.
