Abstract:
Discusses the Polish Bishops' Declaration (23 January 1995), signed by Archbishop Stanisław Gadecki, which states that Auschwitz was the work of the Nazis, where mostly Jews but also Poles were killed, that there were Poles who helped the Jews as well as Polish collaborators, and that the communists censored knowledge about the Holocaust. The German Bishops' Declaration (24 January 1995) states that Auschwitz was designed by the Nazi state, that the Germans bear a historical responsibility for the Holocaust, and that many German Christians were guilty of not having opposed racist antisemitism. Both declarations condemn racism and antisemitism and call for Christian-Jewish dialogue and mutual respect. Includes the original texts of the declarations. Refers, also, to Pope John Paul II's condemnation of the Holocaust and antisemitism on 29 January 1995.
