Abstract:
States that French antisemitic writers of the late 19th century, such as J. Drault, V.L. Daudet, C. Maurras, and E. Drumont, added the category of Judeo-Protestantism to the idea of the Jewish-Masonic conspiracy, in an attempt to provide an explanation for the crisis in France caused by the Prussian defeat of France in 1870 and the establishment of the Third Republic, which brought in its wake waves of liberalization, democratization, and secularization. Antisemitic writers claimed that the Jews (who allegedly supported the German army) would use German Protestantism to destroy French Catholic culture and society, and to enslave the French people.
