Abstract:
Describes the climate of tolerance towards the Jews in Poland prior to 1648, despite traditional accusations that the Jews monopolized trade and finances through their foreign connections and usury. During the Cossack rebellion of Bogdan Chmielnicki (1648-49) and the Polish-Swedish wars (1655-60), the Jews were the victims of all the warring parties; the Jewish communities were more than halved and almost completely ruined as a result. When, after the war, Poland entered a long and difficult general crisis, the Jews were used as scapegoats, heavily taxed, and accused of blood libels, witchcraft, and spreading pestilence.
