Abstract:
In 1937 there were antisemitic demonstrations in Hungary in the streets and in the universities, mainly by right-wing students. The alleged catalyst was the screening of the film "Lovagias ügy" ("A Gallant Deed"), which had no Jewish content, but the director, István Székely, was Jewish and so were some of the main actors. Székely was accused of criticizing Hungarian Christian society in his "Jewish film". He left Hungary in 1938.
