Abstract:
In Pincehely, Hungary, during the parliamentary election in 1901, Néppart (conservative) supporters attacked the supporters of the Liberal candidate who was accompanied by gendarmerie; the latter opened fire at the rioters, killing five of them. Investigates the causes of the incident, going back to the rise of political antisemitism after the Tiszaeszlár blood libel in 1882 and its infiltration into political movements of the 1890s. Criticism of the secular, liberal state often included antisemitism in neo-conservative circles such as the Néppart. The Liberal Party was branded as Jewish, and the elections were marked by open antisemitic incitement by the local priest in Pincehely. Fifteen Jews were injured by the rioters in 1901. Describes, also, the 1832 and 1841 Pincehely and 1891 Nagyszokoly blood libels and their role in the cultivation of local antisemitism.
