Abstract:
At the beginning of the 17th century, the Jews of Thebes were accused of a ritual murder and were forced to pay a large sum of ransom money for the accused Jews. An account of a blood libel (perhaps this same one) was found in a manuscript from Salonika containing rabbinical responsa, which describes the case of the first blood libel known to have occurred in Greece. Relates to other blood libels in that period in Asia Minor, and attributes them to anger and frustration of the Greek populace under Ottoman rule.
