Abstract:
Contends that Herzl's change of mind from belief in assimilation as the solution to the "Jewish question" to a national Zionist solution was engendered not by the Dreyfus Affair, as is generally thought, but by the rampant antisemitism in Vienna. His "conversion" was not the result of one incident, but was the culmination of a slow process (beginning in 1882 when Herzl read Dühring's "Der Talmudjude") in which he came to understand that the emancipation granted the Jews was in effect given on the expectation that the Jews would assimilate and disappear, but antisemitism would not allow that to happen.
