Abstract:
Attempts to reconstruct rescue activities during May-July 1944, following the proposal brought by Joel Brand to negotiate with the Nazis for the ransom of Hungarian Jews. Focuses on Brand's mission and one of its offshoots: a proposal forwarded by Hungarian diplomats and intelligence agents posted in Istanbul to Menachem Bader (a top emissary with the Palestine Rescue Mission in Istanbul) to negotiate personally with German Nazis on Hungarian soil. Discusses the involvement of British, American, Hungarian, and German officials and intelligence agents around the world, as well as the part played by Jewish bodies, such as the Jewish Agency, the Joint, and a variety of representative organizations of the Yishuv and its political parties. States that Horthy's declaration on 20 July 1944 concerning Hungary's readiness to stop the deportations to Poland and make possible the emigration of children and elderly persons shifted rescue activities from Brand's and Bader's proposals to prospects supposedly opened by Horthy's declaration.
