Abstract:
Discusses racist ideologies in Poland and the influence on them of German antisemitism. Characterizes Polish antisemitism, focusing on the Endecja party. States that it was dominated by antisemitic nationalist and traditional elements which were translated in the course of time into political and cultural aims. However, even the ONR (the National Radical Camp) - the most extreme antisemites - did not integrate the Nazi racist model entirely. Only the fringes of the radical right turned racism into a central element of their ideology. Polish antisemitism did not adopt a scientifically-based formulation of racism. Nonetheless, the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 and the anti-Jewish stance adopted by the Polish government at that time introduced into the public discussion of the "Jewish question" racist terms, such as Aryanization, and racially-based practices, such as Aryan paragraphs in by-laws of trade unions, and in the practice of government authorities.
