Abstract:
Examines usury as one of the main professions, and in some communities the only profession, of the Jews in the Middle Ages. Analyzes the causes of this situation, and the Christian animosity it aroused. Discusses various interpretations of Deuteronomy 23:20 regarding the taking of interest. In the Christian interpretation of this formula, usury is understood as an expression of hostility between Jews and Christians. This hostility was used by Ferdinand and Isabella as one of the elements of the Christian defense which justified the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. Discusses, as well, Jewish responses in rabbinic literature to accusations related to usury.
