Abstract:
Excerpts from Jules Isaac's unpublished diary "Carnet du lépreux", written between 1941-43, during his time of refuge in Aix-en-Provence. Focuses on Isaac's reflections on the necessity for Jews to morally and intellectually resist their forced status as "lepers". The excerpts also present Isaac's views on France's ambivalence concerning the Jews and his attitudes toward Judaism and Christianity. Although Isaac argued that the Christian tradition was the first and permanent source of antisemitism, he nevertheless became increasingly oriented toward Jesus.
Note:
With many excerpts from Isaac's diary written during the years 1941-1943.
