Abstract:
Examines the image of the public degradation of Dreyfus in 1895 as reflected in the French antisemitic press of that era. This humiliation was designed to warn Jews of the futility of any attempt to rise to the upper echelons of the French military. Contends that the science of phrenology was used to prove Dreyfus' guilt. Assesses the portrayal of the Jew as traitor in various caricatures; these served to proclaim the racist precept of the Jew's physical incapacity to serve his country, and his deficient virility due to circumcision. Believes that Dreyfus was used as a scapegoat to conceal the illicit relationship between two European military attaches. Concludes that European Jewry was unduly influenced by these negative stereotypes and that their reaction could be found in the new ideal of the physically robust Zionist pioneer.
Note:
On the antisemitic stereotype.
