Abstract:
The first of Marcel Schwob's daily chronicles entitled "Lettre parisienne", published in "Phare de la Loire" in 1891, coincided with the surge of antisemitism which later culminated in the Dreyfus Affair. Schwob's subsequent chronicles served as a platform for his expressions of indignation and scorn against antisemitism and antisemites (e.g. Drumont). A republican with socialist leanings, Schwob followed the Dreyfus Affair closely between 1894-1900. The chronicles show how Schwob's stance evolved from disbelief in Dreyfus's guilt to doubts, and, having demanded decisive proof, he ended up believing in Dreyfus's innocence. He then became an ardent Dreyfusard, who viewed the Affair as a disgrace for France.
