Abstract:
Argues that the Dreyfus Affair had a great impact in rural France. Due to improvements in printing technology in the 1880s-90s, the provinces were inundated by cheap mass-circulated newspapers, containing also antisemitic cartoons. Antisemitism served to unite various groups of conservative, antirepublican, antisocialist politicians in the provinces who had little in common, and many of whom hardly had any political program at all. Because the Jews of France were heavily concentrated in large cities, provincial antisemitic politicians stressed the image of the Jew as an exploiter on the national level, a man of power, cosmopolitan financier, etc., rather than as a usurer or local exploiter. Dreyfus - a Jew, an alien, a member of the military elite, and a "traitor" - was a very suitable symbol. Reproduces antisemitic cartoons disseminated in the provinces.
