Abstract: Racism was widespread among German Protestants in 1932, when 11 million of them voted for Hitler. With the centralization of the Evangelical Church in 1933, the Deutsche Christen took over 75% of the Landeskirchen. The opposing Bekennende Kirche (BK) was internally torn. Parts of it supported the "Aryan paragraph", and the whole movement ignored both the Sterilization Law (1933) and the Nuremberg Laws. Persecuted for its critique of Nazi antisemitism in 1936, and lacking support from the official Church, the BK saw no option but to compromise with the regime and the Church. It did not condemn the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. In 1939 the new spiritual council, including its BK representative, appealed for the purity of German blood. The Church's reactions to the anti-Jewish measures in 1941 were limited to partial protests against the exclusion of baptized Jews. In 1942-43 the BK expressed solidarity with all Jews, and after Stalingrad the Evangelical Church began to protest the extermination of the Jews. Discusses various declarations of repentance by Church leaders in 1945.

Abstract: Discusses how it was that the Nazi leaders in Berlin did not expect to encounter opposition in France to their anti-Jewish policies (e.g., as stated during the Wannsee Conference), and why this was actually the case in occupied France, where French officials collaborated with the Germans in rounding up the Jews.

Abstract: Although France was known for its welcome to refugees, from 1933 on restrictions were imposed for Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. The proposal for immigration restrictions presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs included, among other undesirable groups of immigrants, German Jews who, it was claimed, were not in immediate danger. The orders given to the police included the liquidation of transit centers for German Jews in the Paris area, and their transfer to Palestine. French xenophobia and antisemitism increased after the murder of vom Rath in November 1938, and right-wing parties published articles and pamphlets demanding the expulsion of foreigners and Jews.

Abstract: Describes the meeting in Wannsee of 15 Nazi officials, led by Heydrich, where the decision was taken regarding the "Final Solution of the Jewish question". Traces the development of Nazi antisemitism from the 1920s on, and the gradual radicalization of anti-Jewish measures from 1938. Emphasizes the lack of significant reaction on the part of other countries (e.g. the failure of the Evian Conference), and discusses the plan to transfer the Jews to Madagascar. The Final Solution was already implemented in 1941, with the invasion of the USSR, before the Wannsee Conference, and intensified in 1942 with the operation of the extermination camps.
