Abstract:
The nominally independent, but German-embraced antisemitic Parisian weekly "Au Pilori" (published in 1938-June 1940 as "Le Pilori"), quickly reached a circulation of 125,000 copies. Its vast editorial staff included leading antisemites. "Au Pilori" dehumanized the Jews, while accusing them of a world conspiracy. It labelled the Vichy government's antisemitic legal measures as insufficient, and advocated concentration of all Jews in camps. In December 1940 it began to push for a Final Solution, inviting its readers to participate in a competition entitled: "Where to Stuff Them", referring to the Jews. Contends that the responses of readers are befitting to madmen. The periodical's anti-Masonic and, after June 1941, increasingly anti-communist line seamlessly combined with its anti-Jewish tenor, as did its anti-parliamentarianism. Its venomous worldview was propagated through simplification, use of analogies, total distortion of reality, singling out the Jews as scapegoats, and painting everything black-and-white, good or bad, with the Jews representing evil.
