Kurzfassung:
Reflects, philosophically and in the context of the aerial photographs taken by the Allies in 1944-45 of Auschwitz, on the power of photographs as evidence representing the horrors of the Shoah. Argues that these photographs are linked with those taken inside the gas chambers by a member of the Sonderkommando in summer 1944, and also with written testimonies by camp inmates. Discusses the interpretations of the aerial photographs by American historians Dino Brugioni and Robert Poirer, who discovered them in the 1970s, and their presentation on current official U.S. websites. In both cases, there is a tendency to use the photographs to justify the Allies' decision not to bomb Auschwitz.
