Abstract:
Political antisemitism in Britain arose due to the interaction of a large immigration of Eastern European Jews, the development of political antisemitism in Europe, and various political and social crises. Jewish immigrants were criticized for causing wages to drop and for their unwillingness to assimilate, but there were few violent incidents. The Aliens Act restricting their entry was passed in 1905. Among intellectuals who were antisemitic, the group linked to Hilaire Belloc, Cecil Chesterton, and G.K. Chesterton viewed Jews as connected to financial scandal. Leo Maxse saw the Jews as tools of Germany, and the left-wing J.A. Hobson accused Jewish financial speculators of dragging Britain into the Boer War.
