Abstract:
Examines the theology of the ultra-Orthodox religious thinker Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Unsdorfer (1888-1944) from Bratislava, whose writings and sermons mixed halakhic thought with elements of hasidic and kabbalistic traditions. His writings and sermons in wartime Bratislava not only serve as a historical source regarding the implementation of the anti-Jewish policies (e.g. anti-Jewish decrees, desecrations of synagogues, deportations), they also provide a theological response to the events. Unsdorfer delineated a path through the tragedy for his Jewish contemporaries, in which divine control of history in covenantal terms, the suffering of the righteous, and the importance of silence and prayer were recognized and accepted. In 1944 Unsdorfer was deported to Auschwitz and murdered.
