Abstract:
Discusses the impact of Jesse Jackson’s candidacy (in the 1984 Democratic presidential primary elections) on traditional Jewish support for the Democratic Party. Jackson’s antisemitic remarks, ties to Arab organizations, and refusal to dissociate himself from Louis Farrakhan alienated many Jews. However, their fear of Christian fundamentalism prevented most of them from supporting Republican Ronald Reagan.
