Abstract:
Focuses on reactions following Dreyfus's retrial in Rennes in 1899. The military court upheld Dreyfus's earlier conviction despite the startling information which had come to light since 1894 showing that he was clearly innocent. In Australia, as elsewhere, spontaneous support for Dreyfus gripped virtually all of public opinion. The fact that it was Gentiles who took the initiative in arranging public meetings and issuing protests made it difficult for people to claim that Jews had orchestrated the campaign. Describes some of these meetings and their participants. The speakers were generally mayors of towns and cities, MPs, and clergymen (mainly Protestant). Factors contributing to this great eruption of sympathy for Dreyfus were a firm belief in the superiority of British justice, and anti-French and anti-Catholic sentiments. Australian Jews kept a low profile, but rallied to support Dreyfus when it became evident that he was innocent and that he had become a symbol of persecuted Jewry.
