Abstract:
Mentions executions by the Inquisition of Conversos in Middelburg (in the province of Zeeland) in 1541 and restrictions of Jewish settlement in Zeeland issued by the Emperor Charles V. Sketches the history of Jews from Spain and Portugal who settled in Middelburg from 1587 onwards. Records the intentions of the Christian communities in Zeeland to prevent contacts with Jews and their proselytizing, complaints made regarding noise from Jewish religious services, and Christian desires to convert the Jews. In 1655 the Jews were allowed to establish a cemetery; ceremonies during burial, however, were explicitly forbidden. Describes negotiations of Menasseh ben Israel with the English government on behalf of readmission of Jews to England. He himself spent several weeks in Middelburg after these negotiations, and died there in 1657.
