Abstract:
A paper presented at a conference held in Madison, Wisconsi, in May 1987. Analyzes the political role played by antisemitism from the Middle Ages to the Nazi period, dwelling on the political antisemitism of the late 19th-early 20th centuries. If in the Middle Ages it served to explain great disasters (epidemics, famine, etc.), in the later period it was used by the conservatives in their struggle against liberals, for the consolidation of the concept of the "master race", in the struggle against capitalism, against Marxist socialism, etc. Political antisemitism culminated in the mass extermination of the Jews, the main "competitors" of the "master race", by the Nazis.
