Abstract:
Describes "The Parnas" (1979), a book written by the Jewish Italian-born American psychiatrist Silvano Arieti, which is a partly-fictionalized account of a leading figure in the Jewish community in Pisa, Giuseppe Pardo Roques in the 1930s-early 1940s, who experienced mental illness and was killed by the Nazis. Examines Arieti's reflections on 'insights' provided by mental illness, which are considered through the figure of Pardo Roques, and in the context of the trauma of the Shoah in Italy.
