Abstract:
The rise of antisemitism, both official and popular, in Russia during the period of military defeats in 1914-15 impelled a group of Russian intellectuals, led by Maxim Gorky, to establish in the beginning of 1915 a society aimed to combat it, called the Russian Society for the Study of Jewish Life. Quotes extensively from several of its declarations and appeals. The main activity of the society was publishing, with its greatest achievement the literary collection "Shchit" ("Shield"), edited by Gorky, Leonid Andreyev and Fyodor Sologub. "Shchit" appeared in three editions in 1915-16. In 1915 a conflict erupted in the Society because of an article ordered from Berdyaev - some of the editors found its text to be antisemitic. Jewish intellectuals received the Society coldly; philosemitism was in vogue in Russia at the time, and it was clear that some members of the Society only wanted to gain political capital from it.
