Abstract: Pope Pius XII knew about the Nazi plan to deport the Jews of Rome for liquidation and about the orders from Berlin on this matter received by SS-General Karl Wolff in Rome no later than 9 October 1943 - i.e. a week before the roundup of 16 October. Nevertheless, he did not protest against this action, and also failed to warn the Jews of Rome. Many myths about the role of Pius XII and the Vatican in saving Jews (in particular, the myth of a secret order to hide Jews, allegedly issued by the Pope to convents and monasteries) were created after the war and are not true. Argues that Pius XII's behavior was the result of an agreement between him and the Nazi authorities in Rome: they would respect the neutrality of the Vatican, abstain from its military occupation and deportation of the Pope to Liechtenstein, prevent a communist rebellion in the city, etc., while the Pope would not intervene with the Nazis' anti-Jewish operations. In negotiating with the Nazis, the Pope negotiated not only the Vatican's neutrality, but first and foremost his own safety and a free hand in his attempts to reconciliate Britain and Germany against the common enemy - Bolshevism, and to prevent Germany's capitulation. Believes that the Pope's protest against the "roundup" could have made an impression on the Nazis. The Nazi decision not to repeat this type of action in Italy was in no way a result of the Church's intervention. Concludes that, during the war, Pius XII did not fulfill his role of moral leader to millions of believers.

Abstract: Pope Pius XII's actions during World War II were part of the policy of political neutrality adopted by the Vatican. Contends that this position permitted the Vatican to exercise independently its moral authority. The Pope did not denounce the Reich openly, but utilized diplomatic channels to oppose the Reich in those countries allied to Germany where there was a majority of Catholics. Regarding the Final Solution, Pius XII did not know very much and until 1944 did not know about the existence of Auschwitz. Concludes that the attacks of historians on the Pope are merely ways to reduce the responsibility of the Allied Forces for their non-intervention to save the Jews of Europe.

Abstract: In 1942, 166 Italian Jews and 204 Jewish refugees from other countries lived in the province of Modena under conditions of "libero internamento" ("free internment"), meaning that the Jews agreed not to leave the places assigned to them without authoritized permission. During the Nazi occupation, relatively few Jews - 21 Italians and 45 foreigners - were deported. This was due to rescue aid given to them by the local population and the Church. Most of the Jews went into hiding or escaped to Switzerland. Includes a list of names of the Jews who were deported.

Deals with the distinction between anti-Judaism and antisemitism; Nazi antisemitism and the mass murder of the Jews; the position of the Allied countries vis-a-vis the Jewish question; the Catholic Church in Germany and the encyclical of Pope Pius XI; the question of the silence of Pope Pius XII, and his absolution in the Vatican document; and Jewish reactions to the Vatican document. Pp. 481-491 contain the Italian text of the document.

Note: The appendix (pp. 481-491) contains the letter of Pope John Paul II and the text of Edward Idris Cassidy introducing the document "We Remember".

Abstract: Summarizes, briefly, the history of antisemitism in Europe, and then focuses on Italy in modern times. Contends that antisemitism in Italy was limited to the Church; it did not spread amongst the populace. The Church's antisemitism increased after 1870 as a consequence of the wave of liberalism and secularism in Italian society, for which the Jews were held responsible. In the 1930s-40s, the traditional anti-Judaism of the Church was an obstacle for understanding the tragedy which befell the Jews with the rise of Nazism. Discusses the stance of Pope Pius XII and the policy of the Vatican regarding the persecution and mass murder of Europe's Jews. The Vatican and the episcopate maintained a policy of extreme silence due to the Pope's determination to avoid clashes with Hitler and to keep the Church out of the conflict. Suggests that the fascist Italian state changed its policy and turned against the Jews in the 1930s as a result of Mussolini's attempts to resolve Italy's international problems.

Abstract: States that the Vrba-Wetzler "Auschwitz Protocol" describing the extermination of Hungarian Jews at Birkenau was kept secret for many months before being made public. Due to Allied war security, the Vatican received the April protocol only in October 1944, but the Vatican's representative in Bern, Monsignor Martillotti, met Vrba and Wetzler in Bratislava in June 1944. Discusses, also, the role of Swiss censorship in preventing the news of the extermination from being published in the Swiss press until after August 1944, on the grounds that the information was "false and non verifiable".

Abstract: Discusses the economic aspect of the anti-Jewish legislation in fascist Italy. Shows that the racial laws of November 1938 included no reference to Jewish property, and that in February 1939 the nationalization of only "excess property" (beyond a certain amount) was decreed, and this in order not to damage the Jewish contribution to the Italian economy which, the author states, was largely exaggerated by the stereotype of the "rich Jew". An institution, EGELI, was established to take charge of Jewish real estate and property, and from January 1944 the general expropriation began. Only in 1945 did the Italian administration initiate, though reluctantly, the restitution of Jewish property confiscated by the fascists.

Abstract: Discusses the common assumption that the "brave" Italians rescued a lot of Jews during the Holocaust and that the implementation of the racial laws was approximate at best. States that Mussolini's anti-Jewish policy was in gestation during the period 1936-37, and that the discriminatory legislation of 1938 was no imitation of German legislation nor was it adopted under German pressure, but in order to keep in line with the anti-Jewish international climate (e.g. in Germany, Hungary, Romania). Stresses that a great number of Italians showed indifference, and that the administration promptly and strictly implemented the instructions received. Under the Italian Social Republic, Italian police and para-military organizations fully collaborated with the Germans in arresting and deporting the Jews. Argues that, many times, helping Jews was an expression of general dissatisfaction with a bankrupt government. also observes that it took years until the new government abolished the racial legislation, between 1945-47.

Abstract: Discusses eleven letters (now in the Leo Baeck Institute archives) written in Italy between 1939-44 by Maximilian Segall, a Jew from Danzig, and sent to Montevideo. They are a testimony of his efforts to escape Nazi persecution. In 1939 he had emigrated to Italy, from where he attempted in vain to escape overseas. After Italy joined the war in 1940, as a Jewish refugee he was arrested and sent to the internment camp Casoli. Following the German takeover of northern Italy in 1943, he was deported in February 1944 - together with 700 Jews - to Auschwitz, where he probably perished.
