Abstract:
Surveys the themes of denouncement and blackmail of Jews during World War II in Poland as they appear in Polish fiction and prose. Among others, discusses novels and short stories by Henryk Grynberg, Hanna Krall, Stanisław Wygodzki, Bohdan Wojdowski, and Michał Głowiński. The opinion persists among Poles that denouncements were a relatively limited phenomenon. However, both historical research and analysis of the literature and memoirs show that it was a real plague during the Nazi occupation. States that the principal motives of the denouncers were a desire to seize Jewish goods, frustration with wartime conditions, feelings of superiority and power that it gave to the perpetrators, and antisemitism.
