Abstract:
States that the reason for the enactment of the Racial Laws in Italy in 1938 was Mussolini's opportunistic approach to Nazi Germany. This was a consequence of Italy's confrontation with Great Britain and France, which began when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and resulted in Italy's international isolation. Mussolini wished to facilitate Italy's alignment with Nazi Germany by clearing ideological differences with that regime. The Racial Laws were received with indifference by most Italians, who, although influenced by traditional Christian prejudice toward Jews, did not consider the Jews a danger to the Italian nation (as fascist propaganda did) and did not view them as racially different.
