Abstract:
Examines the thesis of a continuity between Wilhelmine and Nazi antisemitism, arguing that such continuities can be traced back even farther, but there are also discontinuities. Already in the early 19th century antisemitism became more pronounced, and new motives were added to the old-time religious ones - conservative-romantic, liberal, and national. During the Wilhelmine period, antisemitism was exploited in the propaganda of the Churches and the political parties, and it infiltrated into social, economic, and students' organizations; it then developed into a racist and "voelkisch" worldview. However, it had little political influence, and the political culture ruled out violence. This changed after the brutalities of the First World War, the "stab in the back" allegation, and the economic crisis, which led to the breakdown of the political culture and the rise of Nazism. The prejudices of the 19th century paved the way for scapegoating the Jews, the reversal of their emancipation, their persecution and extermination.
