Abstract:
Discussing the attitudes of French Jewish intellectuals during the Dreyfus Affair, illustrates their reluctance to react from a Jewish standpoint by examining the cases of Emile Durkheim and Julien Benda. In the face of antisemitic opinions (such as those of Ferdinand Brunetiere), they were not prepared to contend with antisemitism, and at the same time they refused to express solidarity with the Jews, in order to preserve their theoretical equality as French citizens.
