Abstract:
Focuses on ways in which Jewish women survived the Holocaust by communal cooperation and the development of leadership. Discusses these phenomena against the background of gender roles in the Jewish community in Europe prior to Nazism, in Nazi Germany in 1933-39, in the communal ghetto framework in 1939-43, in Theresienstadt as a transition between ghetto and concentration camp, and in concentration camps in 1942-45. Concludes that women's survival strategies were different from men's, often reflecting radical changes in society. Examples were women's adoption of leadership roles, and their functioning in the compulsory single-sex (i.e. women only) frameworks created by the Nazis. In discussing various women's networks, the communal bond is highlighted as a means of survival, albeit often temporary, in the face of ultimate trauma.
