Abstract:
Describes the rescue in 1944-45 of more than 8,300 Hungarian Jews in houses under the protection of the Spanish embassy in Budapest. The Spanish foreign office sponsored this action at the urging of the World Jewish Congress and in the expectation that it would contribute to international goodwill toward Spain. The Spanish representative, Angel Sanz Briz, enlisted the aid of Giorgio Perlasca, an Italian businessman in Budapest with Spanish connections. Perlasca took charge of the houses of refuge and, concurrently with Wallenberg, rescued Jews from transports and concentration camps. After Sanz Briz's flight from Budapest, Perlasca named himself as successor and bluffed his way through confrontations with Nazi officials. He prevented the district commandant Vajna from transferring Jews from the Spanish houses to the ghetto, which Vajna planned to set on fire at the last moment before the Russian occupation. After the war, Sanz Briz took credit for the rescue of the Jews, and Perlasca was almost forgotten.
