Abstract:
Examines the roots of the Muslim anti-Christian riots in Aleppo in 1850. Concludes that the changing economic situation in Syria was not among the main factors of the riots - the Jews, who gained more than others from this change did not suffer during the riots. The only extant Jewish source describing the riots (presented on pp. 95-96) expressed exultation at the downfall of the Christians. Shows that relations between Jews and Christians deteriorated in the first half of the 19th century due to several factors, among them the intensified economic rivalry between the two religious minorities, and the fact that a Jew was appointed as the consul in Aleppo of several Christian nations, and that the Jews and Muslims did not welcome the Ottoman liberal reforms of the 1840s while the Christians did. The animosity between Christians and Jews rose sharply after the Damascus Affair of 1840, when the accused Jews were released.
