Abstract:
Questions the accepted opinion that Ben-Gurion was indifferent to the Holocaust and to demands in the Yishuv to rescue Jews. Suggests that during most of the war he was deeply pessimistic about the possibility of action without the support of Great Britain and the U.S. The Allies' sabotage of projects which he did try to promote - such as the rescue of 5,000 children, the landing of several hundred paratroopers to make contact with Jews in the occupied lands, and Eichmann's proposal, transmitted by Joel Brand, to free Hungarian Jews in exchange for merchandise - reinforced his pessimism. It was not his way to express emotions; he preferred to devote himself to practical plans. Despite his realization that much of European Jewry had been destroyed, he continued planning for postwar immigration in accordance with the Biltmore program.
