Abstract:
The theme of the Roman destruction of Jerusalem as an act of revenge against the Jews for the Crucifixion was prevalent in medieval literature. Analyzes three versions of "The Story of the Noble Vespasian", printed in Spain and in Portugal between 1491-99, positing that these editions were possibly politically motivated - to justify the choice that was given the Jews of conversion or expulsion. Views the text of the story as an anti-Jewish and pro-Converso religious tract rather than as a romance.
