Abstract:
Born in Constantinople as the son of an English physician, Frederick Millingen (1836-1901?) was raised in Italy. In his adult years, he returned to the Ottoman Empire, converted to Islam, took the name Osman Bey, and served in the Ottoman army. In 1874 he defected to Russia, converted to the Orthodox Church, took the name Vladimir Andreyevich, and enrolled in the Russian army. States that Osman Bey's antisemitism stemmed from hatred of the British mixed with a conflicted relationship with his father, at the time of Disraeli's premiership. He became a prolific writer of antisemitic propaganda (e.g. "Die Eroberung der Welt durch die Juden, " 1873) in which he contended that the Jewish conspiracy was behind everything, from the nihilists and the assassination of Tsar Alexander II to the revolution of 1848 and the Risorgimento. Suggests that Osman Bey's writings had an influence on the producers of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion, " as well as on Italian fascists. He died in Nice, probably in 1901.
