Abstract:
Surveys the situation of the Jewish communities in the region called Vojvodina (now in Serbia) during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The region was part of the Austrian Empire, and at the time of the merger of Hungary with Austria in 1867 it was annexed to Hungary. In all the provinces of Hungary, economic life began to flourish. The changes led to gradual Jewish emancipation from 1860 onwards. In the 1880s, due to Jewish support for Hungarian nationalism and worsening economic conditions, there was an antisemitic reaction in the Serbian national movement, influenced by traditions of the Orthodox Church, and amongst Hungarian Christians, influenced by teachings of the Catholic and Protestant Churches. Discusses the spread of antisemitism in Hungary from this period up to the First World War, after which Vojvodina was incorporated into Serbia. The Jews responded by strengthening Jewish self-determination and founding a Zionist movement in Vojvodina.
