Abstract:
Scholarly research on the history of Auschwitz was preceded by the work of investigative and judicial bodies faced by the necessity to punish the perpetrators of the crimes committed in the camp. In 1949 the documents collected by the investigators were transferred to the Museum at Auschwitz, in which framework the Museum Archive was established in 1957. Dwells on the work done collecting primary sources, publishing, and conducting research on Auschwitz that has been carried out by the Museum Archive, especially since 1990. Scholars of the Museum have researched various aspects of the camp's history, including prisoners and victims of the camp, forced labor, resistance and escapes, and the last days of the camp. One of the key issues is to establish the number of victims and their breakdown by ethnicity. The Museum is planning to publish a comprehensive monograph on the history of the camp.
