Abstract:
A popularly written biographical sketch of Szmul Zygielbojm, focusing on his wartime trek from German-occupied Warsaw to France, then to Britain and the USA; his activities in these countries; and his death in 1943. Zygielbojm's main goal was to inform the free world of the mass murder of European Jews and to impel the Allies to act for their rescue. One of his co-workers, Jan Karski, provided him with information on what was going on in Poland. Facing the indifference of the Allies and of the Polish government-in-exile in London, Zygielbojm committed suicide. Presents an excerpt from his last letter.
