Abstract:
An account of the life of Joseph Salamon, who was born in 1932 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and is now a sculptor and graphic artist living in Denmark, based on interviews conducted with him in 2012. During World War II, Salamon's family lived in Bucharest. He relates the everyday life of a Jewish family in Bucharest, and the difficult realities of the Holocaust. However, Salamon also describes friendly encounters with German soldiers in Bucharest, some of whom he claims helped save many Jews in his neighborhood. He also describes Jewish refugees from Poland and Hungary who his father's company saved and sheltered. After the war, the family moved to Israel. Salamon studied art and worked in Israel and in Italy, and eventually settled in Denmark in 1960.
