Abstract:
Examines images of Jews in Slavic folklore, as set down by folklorists of the late 19th century and by ethnolinguistic expeditions to Polesie in 1980-85. Focuses on Polesie, which has a mixed ethnic (Poles, Ukrainians, Belorussians) and religious composition. Many images of Jews harbored by Slavs are antisemitic - e.g. they deny that the Jews have a human soul; they believe that Jews are connected with the Devil, and therefore the period of Jewish holidays is not a fit time for Polesians to carry out successful activities. Tales are widespread on how the Jews were punished for their lack of belief in Jesus. Many Slavs deny that Jesus was a Jew; they have their own version of the legend of the Wandering Jew; and they connect the myth of the Antichrist with Jews.
