Jews History Expulsion, 1492
Abstract:
Explains the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 as a result of growing anti-Jewish hostility, as well as of religious and political considerations, namely the achievement of national unity. Discusses the extreme secrecy surrounding the expulsion decree, which was signed in Granada (Castile) on 31 March 1492 but made official by three Aragonese court officials and registered only by the Chancellery of Aragón (and not Castile). States that the decree, which was to be made public only on 29 April, stipulated the sealing of the Jewish houses and quarters, and the subsequent inventory of all Jewish property. In order to avoid any last-hour transfer of Jewish monies or valuables, and because he did not trust the Castilian bureaucracy, King Ferdinand (of Aragón) entrusted this "secret operation" to his closest assistants. Includes the text of the expulsion decree.
