Kurzfassung:
Comments on the policy of Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, toward the Jews, when, during his rule in Italy (489-526), episodes of anti-Jewish hostility took place, based on the writings of Cassiodorus (ca. 490-580), a Roman monk who was secretary to the king. Between 507-511 and 523-526 the Church and the populace instigated acts of violence against Jews in several cities of northern Italy, violating and burning synagogues and accusing Jews of desecrating Christian symbols. Although at that time the papacy maintained a tolerant policy toward Jews, based on the teaching of St. Augustine, the local bishops did not. The Jews turned to Theodoric for protection. The king referred to traditional Roman law (not to canon law) in order to deal with their claims and preserve public order.
