    Abstract: Sprache spiegelt die Wahrnehmung, das Denken und die Gefühle, strukturiert die Wirklichkeit und das Zusammenleben. Sie verbindet und trennt. Antisemitismus kommt in Beleidigungen und Schmähungen zum Ausdruck, aber auch in häufig »nicht bös gemeinten« Worten oder Redewendungen des Alltagssprachgebrauchs. Julia Bernstein zeichnet in ihrem Buch nach, wie der Antisemitismus in der Sprache sowohl mit Grenzziehungen und Zuschreibungen als auch mit Abwertungen und Dämonisierungen zum Ausdruck kommt, aber auch in einem Zusammenhang mit Migrationsprozessen und dem Erbe des Nationalsozialismus steht. Dadurch beleuchtet sie grundlegende und versteckte Mechanismen antisemitischer Diskriminierung und Feindschaft wie auch die häufig nicht wahrgenommenen Auswirkungen auf Jüdinnen und Juden in Deutschland.

    Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women's movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women's movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.

    Abstract: Postkoloniale Studien zählen aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen, was angesichts der massiven Effekte des Kolonialismus nicht verwundern kann. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Abstract: "This book consists of a range of essays covering the complex crises, tensions and dilemmas but also the positive potential in the meeting of Jews with Western culture. In numerous contexts and through the work of fascinating individuals and thinkers, the work examines some of the consequences of political, cultural and personal rupture, as well as the manifold ways in which various Jewish intellectuals, politicians (and occasionally spies!) sought to respond to these ruptures and carve out new, sometimes profound, sometimes fanciful, options of thought and action. It also delves critically into the attacks on liberal and Enlightenment humanism. In almost all the essays the fragility of things is palpably present and the book touches on some of the ironies, problematics and functions of responses to that condition. The work mirrors the author's ongoing fascination with the always fraught, fragile and creatively fecund confrontation of Jews (and others) with European modernity, its history, politics, culture and self-definition. In a time of increasing anxiety and feelings of fragility, this work may be helpful in understanding how people at an earlier (and sometimes contemporary) period sought to come to terms with a similar predicament."     Abstract: Seit 2002 erhebt das Forschungsteam um Elmar Brähler und Oliver Decker die rechtsextremen und autoritären Einstellungen in Deutschland. Diese Studienreihe, die als Leipziger »Mitte«-Studie bekannt wurde, hat sich zu einem der wichtigsten Barometer der politischen Kultur in Deutschland entwickelt. Auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse einer 2018 durchgeführten repräsentativen Bevölkerungsumfrage wird die gegenwärtige politische Situation in Deutschland beschrieben und ihre Ursachen werden analysiert. Stärker noch als in den vergangenen Jahren liegt der Fokus in der aktuellen Studie auf der autoritären Dynamik in der Gesellschaft. Die gravierenden gesellschaftspolitischen Veränderungen, die sich aktuell abzeichnen, sind Anlass, mit der nun »Leipziger Autoritarismus-Studie« benannten Untersuchung auf die Gefahren für die Demokratie hinzuweisen.     Abstract: "Modern antisemitism and the modern discipline of sociology not only emerged in the same period, but--antagonism and hostility between the two discourses notwithstanding--also overlapped and complemented each other. Sociology emerged in a society where modernization was often perceived as destroying unity and "social cohesion." Antisemitism was likewise a response to the modern age, offering in its vilifications of "the Jew" an explanation of society's deficiencies and crises. Antisemitism and the Constitution of Sociology is a collection of twelve essays providing a comparative analysis of modern antisemitism and the rise of sociology. This volume addresses three key areas: the strong influence of writers of Jewish background and the rising tide of antisemitism on the formation of sociology; the role of antisemitism in the historical development of sociology through its treatment by leading figures in the field, such as Emile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons, and Theodor W. Adorno; and the discipline's development in the aftermath of the Nazi Holocaust. Together the essays provide a fresh perspective on the history of sociology and the role that antisemitism, Jews, fascism, and the Holocaust played in shaping modern social theory. "

Die Analyse von Begegnungen zwischen jüdischen, russischen, deutschen, israelischen und muslimischen Traditionen offenbart einen ungezwungenen Umgang mit jüdischer Religion und Symbolik, jüdischer Essenstradition und Mode.Diese ethnologische Studie zeigt: Es ist ein Umgang »koscher light«, in dem sich Religion und Tradition nach den Gesetzen der Urbanität richten.
    Abstract: What role do spatial aspects play for the identity work and community education of young Russian-speaking Jews who now live in Germany? Alina Gromova has accompanied 15 young adults for a year through their daily lives and followed them to places like Jewish dates and parties, cafés and homes, synagogues and clubs. Her analysis of encounters between Jewish, Russian, German, Israeli, and Muslim traditions reveals a casual handling of Jewish religion, symbolism, food tradition, and fashion. This ethnographic study exhibits the dealings of Generation »Kosher Light«, in which religion and tradition conform to the laws of urbanity.

    Abstract: Inwiefern sind Erkenntniskraft und Stil der Sozialwissenschaft gebunden an die Herkunftskultur und die Lebensbedingungen ihrer Autoren? In der Erörterung dieser Frage vereinigt diese Anthologie Einzelstudien über Biographie und Werk bekannter und unbekannterer deutschsprachiger Sozialtheoretiker, die ihre Wurzeln im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts (1900-1933) haben - einer der fruchtbarsten Phasen dieser Tradition, die jedoch gewaltsam beendet wurde. Die Mehrzahl der sozialtheoretischen Emigranten musste wegen ihrer jüdischen Herkunft das Land verlassen, wie auch immer sie sich bislang zu dieser verhalten hatten. Doch in welcher Weise haben solche Identitätskonstruktionen das Denken dieser Sozialtheoretiker beeinflusst?

    Abstract: Der 1970 erstmals erschienene Band Was ist Soziologie? ist neben den Bänden zum Prozeß der Zivilisation der meistrezipierte Text von Norbert Elias. In ihm führt Elias in die grundlegenden Perspektiven und in entscheidende Etappen der Geschichte der Soziologie ein. Hier formuliert er zentrale Begriffe seiner Prozeßsoziologie wie »Figuration«, »Figurationswandel«, »Prozeßmodell« und »Spielmodelle« und erörtert die Aufgabe des Soziologen als eines »Mythenjägers«. Soziologie, so Elias, ermöglicht einen Zugang zur gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit, der distanzierter, weniger gefühlsbetont und den eigenen Zwängen weniger verhaftet ist, als dies beim »Alltagsmenschen « der Fall ist. Die Neuausgabe dieses klassischen Textes innerhalb der Edition der Gesammelten Schriften komplettiert den bekannten Text von 1970 um hier erstmals veröffentlichte Texte, die Bestandteil der ursprünglichen Fassung waren. Es handelt sich dabei um das Kapitel Über die Entdeckung des Gegenstandes der Soziologie und das Kapitel über Karl Marx. Die Spannung zwischen Ideologie und Wissenschaft, so zeigt Elias detailliert am Beispiel von Marx, ist nicht nur eine Sache der Rezipienten, sondern auch des Autors selbst. Um so wichtiger ist es, so Elias’ wissenschaftssoziologische Maxime, sich einem klassischen Autor weder rein systematisch noch rein historisch, sondern innerhalb eines Entwicklungsmodells zu nähern.

    Abstract: Als Band 8 der Gesammelten Schriften Adornos erscheint der erste Teil seiner soziologischen Arbeiten. Gesellschaftliches ist der Gegenstand dieser Aufsätze. Es ist im Grunde der Gegenstand des gesamten Denkens von Adorno, da es in allen geistigen, kulturellen und sozialen Phänomenen die Spuren der Vergesellschaftung aufzuweisen trachtet. Deshalb bilden die Soziologischen Schriften nicht eigentlich eine Sondergruppe in seinem Werk, sie sind vielmehr ein integraler Bestandteil der Adornoschen Philosophie. Aber sie zeigen vielleicht leichter, weil direkter auf die gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit und ihre Diagnose bezogen, welchen Beitrag dieses Philosophieren zur "Kritischen Theorie der Gesellschaft" geleistet hat. Sie zeigen auch, warum Adornos Denken bei manchen seiner Schüler eine Wendung hat nehmen können, die in ihm selbst nicht vorgeprägt ist, für die es aber gleichwohl, dialektisch vermittelt, die Weichen gestellt hat.

    Abstract: Will American Jews survive their success? Or will the United States' uniquely hospitable environment lead inexorably to their assimilation and loss of cultural identity? This is the conundrum that Seymour Martin Lipset and Earl Raab explore in their wise and learned book about the American Jewish experience. Jews, perhaps more than any ethnic or religious minority that has migrated to these shores, have benefited from the country's openness, egalitarianism and social heterogeneity. This unusually good fit, the authors argue, has as much to do with the exceptionalism of the Jewish people as with that of America. But acceptance for all ancestral groups has its downside: integration into the mainstream erodes their defining features, diluting the loyalties that sustain their members
    Abstract: The authors vividly illustrate this paradox as it is experienced by American Jews today - in their high rates of intermarriage, their waning observance of religious rites, their extraordinary academic and professional success, their commitment to liberalism in domestic politics, and their steadfast defense of Israel. Yet Jews view these trends with a sense of foreboding: "We feel very comfortable in America - but anti-Semitism is a serious problem"; "We would be desolate if Israel were lost - but we don't feel as close to that country as we used to"; "More of our youth are seeking some serious form of Jewish affirmation and involvement but more of them are slipping away from Jewish life." These are the contradictions tormenting American Jews as they struggle anew with the never-dying problem of Jewish continuity
